PAT Tester

Location: Darlington Northeast

Contract: Full Time Permanent

Salary up to £29,635.25 per annum, plus, company van & fuel card

42.5 hours per week (8-5 Monday- Friday)

Are you detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and looking for a role where your work makes a real difference? We are seeking a motivated Portable Appliance Tester to ensure the safety and compliance of electrical equipment across our offices and workplaces. In this role, you will be responsible for testing and inspecting equipment to the highest standards, keeping meticulous records, and helping us maintain a safe environment for our teams. This is a hands-on role that combines technical expertise, problem-solving, and professional communication – perfect for someone who enjoys working both independently and as part of a wider compliance team.

Duties:

  • Perform Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) in line with the current Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment and Mears’ policies and procedures.
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date inventory of all electrical equipment and tools using IT databases and spreadsheets, ensuring compliance with planned maintenance schedules.
  • Carry out visual inspections and PAT testing on equipment, recording accurate results and maintaining a complete audit trail for compliance, safety, and invoicing purposes.
  • Travel to Mears branches within a designated area, working across office, workshop, and site environments to complete testing at agreed intervals.
  • Prepare and submit clear, timely branch reports on test results, updating the Mears Plant and Equipment database and PAT database as required.
  • Keep a well-organised diary of appointments, proactively communicating any changes to minimise disruption for branch teams.
  • Attend training sessions, toolbox talks, and meetings to stay up to date with industry standards, policies, and personal development opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Technical Compliance Office and Electrical Compliance Managers, representing the team professionally at all times.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external clients, ensuring clear communication and a professional appearance.
  • Report any health and safety concerns promptly to help maintain a safe working environment for all.
  • Safely use and maintain the company vehicle/van in line with company policy, including daily checks, damage reporting, and ensuring it is kept clean and presentable.

Role Criteria:

  • Proven experience in Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)
  • Hold a PAT Testing qualification
  • Good understanding of the Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment
  • Basic IT skills, including the use of databases and spreadsheets for maintaining accurate records.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, clear reports.
  • Good organisational skills, including the ability to keep a well-structured diary and manage appointments.
  • Excellent communication skills to liaise with colleagues, managers, and clients professionally.
  • Commitment to health and safety best practice and reporting potential risks promptly.
  • Full UK driving licence and ability to travel between branches within the Northeast area.

To drive a Mears vehicle, you must be aged over 21 have held your licence over 3 months and have less than 9 points.

As part of the recruitment process for this role, we will carry out a Background, Identity, Security clearance & BPSS check. For these checks to be completed, we will require from you the relevant identification, including Proof of Address, References, a valid passport and proof that you have lived in the UK for the last 5 years.
