About the Role

We’re looking for a reliable and proactive Caretaker to join our Facilities Maintenance team in Cambridge. You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day upkeep, safety, and cleanliness of buildings and communal areas, ensuring they remain in excellent condition for residents, staff, and visitors.

This is a hands-on role requiring practical skills, a strong sense of responsibility, and a commitment to delivering high standards of service. You’ll work independently and as part of a wider team, supporting planned and reactive maintenance tasks across multiple sites.

Role Responsibilities

  • Carry out general building maintenance including basic plumbing and carpentry
  • Conduct regular inspections of communal areas, plant rooms, and external grounds
  • Ensure cleanliness of entrances, corridors, stairwells, bin stores, and outdoor spaces
  • Replace light bulbs, unblock sinks/toilets, and repair minor fixtures and fittings
  • Monitor and report any health and safety hazards or building defects
  • Support contractors and tradespeople on site, ensuring access and safety compliance
  • Manage waste disposal and recycling, including moving bins and bulky items
  • Respond to emergency maintenance issues and escalate where necessary
  • Maintain security of buildings including locking/unlocking premises and checking alarms
  • Carry out fire alarm tests, emergency lighting checks, and other compliance routines
  • Keep accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities
  • Ensure all work is completed in line with health and safety regulations and company procedures
  • Provide excellent customer service to residents, staff, and visitors

Role Criteria

  • Previous experience in a caretaker, facilities, or maintenance role
  • Experience in the above duties
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and general building repairs
  • Understanding of health and safety practices, including manual handling and COSHH
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own schedule
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Physically fit and able to carry out manual tasks
  • Basic IT literacy for logging tasks and reporting issues
  • Full UK driving licence

To drive a Mears vehicle, you must be aged over 21 have held your licence over 3 months and have less than 9 points.
