Senior SHEQ Manager

London/SE Region

Permanent Full-time role paying a salary of up to £60,000 depending on experience, plus a company car or car allowance of £4,500 and great company benefits.

Are you an experienced Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Manager looking to make your mark in a new role? This is an exciting time to join Mears as we move forward, winning new contracts and expanding our business. We are looking to recruit a Branch SHE Manager, ideally be based in the Dartford/London hubs and willing to cover covering London and Home Counties. This new role will offer variety and a unique opportunity to make the role your own.

About the role:

The role will be based at our Dartford/Islington operational hubs where Mears has responsibility for a range of works including, but not limited to capital investment projects comprising EWI, Cladding, Roofing, Windows, Cyclical Fabric Repairs and Major Projects.

There will be an expectation to travel to Thanet, Thurrock, Wandle, Brighton, Islington, Tower Hamlets with potential growth opportunities in London and Home Counties.

As Health &Safety Manager you will lead on all elements of health and safety across the branch’s area of operation. You will be an integral member of the management team developing good working relationships with Clients and all staff members alike. With a purpose to develop and deliver a high-quality SHE services which monitors compliance with legislation, policy, procedures and systems. You will lead on all training, site inspections, record keeping, and engagement of staff and the client.

The role will support Planned, Retrofit and Net Zero Works across the portfolio in London and the South East to include Planned contracts for Thanet, Islington, Thurrock, Tower Hamlets & Brighton.

This includes all construction and non-construction related activities.

Specifically, the role will include:

  • Operating at Senior Management Level and being part of the Contract SMT, informing across all areas of strategy within the business
  • Ownership of strategic and operational health & safety activity, including the development and implementation of process and policy. Specifically, you will be responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of the branch health and safety policy and the development and delivery of an associated Road Map to drive continued improvement
  • Ownership of the relationship, for health and safety matters, with the client. Ensuring they have the information they required to effectively understand the health and safety performance of the contract.
  • Oversight and audit of Compliance related works delivered; including assessment of certification of works and training of colleagues when issues are identified
  • Monitoring health and safety performance, setting up and overseeing processes to ensure performance is communicated to relevant stakeholders, is understood and that proactive and reactive actions are taken in response to KPI’s
  • Ownership of Strategic Health & Safety Core Group, being the branch lead in this forum
  • Running SHEQ regular stand down sessions across all work streams
  • You will lead on the delivery of the branch health & safety committee ensuring relevant health & safety information is shared with key stakeholders, including the client. You will provide data, on an agreed frequency, with relevant stakeholders to discuss any current culture, trends, or proposed campaigns as well as accident, incident and near miss events to support pro-active action to support a positive business culture towards health & safety.
  • Pro-actively identify SHEQ trends and set out action plans and where required business cases to remedy
  • Accountability for the health and safety culture in the branch, both on site and in the office.
  • The development and delivery of a branch wide health and safety induction, including site and office-based staff.
  • Responsibility for the delivery and development of ongoing health and safety training, including record keeping and reporting.
  • You will lead on the development and delivery of a programme of SHEQ compliance audits to ensure the branch remains fully compliant. You will lead on the production of post audit reports, detailing findings and appropriate actions and liaise with the management teams at the branch to resolve these; ensuring all issues are addressed effectively
  • The investigation of all Accidents and Incidents and the production of detailed reports on any accidents/Incidents occurring within the branch where RIDDOR applies, ensuring that the appropriate RIDDOR documentation is completed and forwarded to the Head of SHEQ (South).  
  • Inform Head of SHEQ (South) if there is any involvement from the local Environmental Health and/or Health and Safety Executive and assist as required.
  • Ensuring that all sub-contractors working for the branch are vetted using the PQQ process and that they are working in a safe manner and in compliance with SHEQ legislation, Company Policy, Procedures, and contract term always
  • Carrying out & recording SHEQ inspections of sites to ensure that all operating procedures are being complied with, liaising with Managers and Supervisors, and where necessary the Head of SHEQ (South) in order to resolve issues arising from these checks. 
  • Ensuring all tools, including power tools have been inspected, tested, and are maintained, that records are kept, tools are suitable for purpose and operatives are trained in the use tool being used.
  • Ensuring that Construction Phase Plans, COSHH Assessments and Risk Assessments are produced for projects as applicable.  Provide operational teams with all the necessary support to ensure that these plans are implemented in full and monitor compliance.
  • You will provide support to all staff, and report non-compliance to managers.
  • Providing regular monthly reports to the Head of SHEQ (South) concerning all SHEQ aspects within the branches region.
  • Ensure the branch is fully updated on all legislature amendments and these are effectively cascaded throughout the contract structure, and subsequently adhered to

The Branch SHE Manager will be expected to deliver formal training to the wider team and business, a level 3 qualification in training would be an advantage but not essential as we can provide this for you as part of your personal development.

A Valid UK Driving License is essential for this role.

All our roles require candidates to have the entitlement to work within the UK, Mears- does not currently offer visa sponsorship.

Role Criteria:

  • NEBOSH Certificate / NEBOSH Construction Certificate 
  • Experience in construction H&S
  • Experience in Social Housing
  • Extensive practical health and safety experience
  • Valid UK Driving License
  • Current knowledge of health and safety legislation, good working practices are essential
  • Strong experience in the requirements and associated documentation of compliance related works (EICR / FRA)
  • Experience and understanding of health and safety issues in a property maintenance / management setting.
  • A team player, with a pro-active and positive can-do attitude.   
  • Able to use your own initiative, be confident, decisive, enthusiastic, reliable, patient, approachable and have a willingness to develop self and others
  • HNC in Construction or equivalent qualification (desirable)
  • Good practical knowledge of BS5975:2019
  • IOSH or other H&S qualification
  • Scaffold Inspection including Design Scaffolds

Desirable Requirements  

  • Diploma or level 5 qualification in Health and Safety
  • An environmental management qualification
  • Auditor Qualification
  • Any other H&S qualification used on a construction site; scaffolding, etc.
  • Knowledge of Temporary Works, Logistic Plans, Traffic Management Plans which will be required for some of our larger sites.
